Two Tips People Should Follow When Shopping for Skincare for Their Sensitive Skin

Joann Duncan

Here are two tips a person should follow if they need to shop skincare for sensitive skin.

They should avoid ingredients that will strip the skin of its natural oils

People with sensitive skin often have compromised skin barriers, which results in their skin reacting (by, for example, getting red or very dry) whenever they use harsh skincare products. A person with this issue should avoid buying skincare products that could strip their skin of its natural oils, as this oil-stripping could compromise their skin barrier even more.

For example, when shopping for cleansers, those with sensitive skin should ensure the ones they choose either don't feature sulphates or that the sulphates they contain are gentle, and are low down on the ingredient list (which usually indicates that there is a small percentage of them in the skincare formula). This is because sulphates are a type of detergent that, whilst very effective at removing the oils and dirt from both the skin and the hair, can leave sensitive skin feeling extra dry and sore. Instead, those with this issue should look for oil-based cleansers, which emulsify when mixed with water so they can easily be rinsed off. These oil-based cleansers can be very effective at removing makeup and dirt but won't strip the skin of its natural oils in the way that sulphate-based cleansers can.

They shouldn't buy and use too many skincare products at once

Those with sensitive skin should not purchase and use lots of skincare products at once. If they do this and notice that their skin is getting more sensitive or is reacting to their new skincare routine, it will be hard for them to pin down which of their new products is making their skin worse. If however, they stick to a basic skincare routine that consists of a cleanser, a moisturiser and an SPF, and then only introduce other products (such as serums, masks, etc.) when they've found versions of their foundational products that agree with their sensitive skin, they'll find it much easier to determine if any new products they add to their skincare routine are causing skin reactions.

Furthermore, people with sensitive skin that's caused by their compromised skin barrier should avoid using lots of skincare products that feature strong active ingredients, like retinol, BHAs or AHAs, until their skin improves, as these strong exfoliants can make skin-barrier problems worse. Instead, they should stick to a simple routine that will give their skin barrier time to fully heal, before gradually adding in these anti-ageing ingredients in small doses.

If you want to buy skincare products for sensitive skin, reach out to a supplier, such as Prolox.
