Two common mistakes people make when they take modelling courses

Joann Duncan

Here are the mistakes people usually make when they take modelling courses.

They wear the wrong clothes and heavy make-up

People who enrol in modelling courses will, understandably, want to look their best when they attend their classes. However, the mistake that some make is wearing the wrong type of dressy clothes and very heavy make-up that masks their features. This can cause issues, as in most courses like this, the course leaders will assess each student's physical appearance so that they can then advise them on which of their features would be considered the most appealing within certain modelling markets, as well as the poses they should use when they're photographed, to accentuate these features.

If, for example, a student is wearing a flowy ankle-length skirt and a baggy jumper, the course leader might not be able to see their muscular shoulders and legs (features which could make this student the ideal candidate for sports modelling), and won't be able to offer as much advice on how they can showcase these physical features. Students who want their course leaders to give them accurate and helpful advice must dress in a way that facilitates this and must avoid wearing too much makeup to their classes.

They don't heed the course instructor's advice regarding which modelling markets they're suitable for

Course leaders will usually give their students recommendations regarding which modelling markets they should explore based on their appearance. This advice will be extremely accurate, provided the students do not dress in a way that disguises their most prominent physical features, and will be based on the course leader's own extensive knowledge of the world of modelling.  One error students make is not heeding this advice; this is often because they have had their heart set on a specific type of modelling or because they dislike the aspects of their appearance that would make them good candidates for the modelling work the course leaders have recommended.

However, if a person decides to, for instance, apply to a modelling agency that only works with high-fashion editorial models or decides to attend open calls for editorial modelling jobs that aren't a good fit for them, they may get disheartened and lose a lot of their confidence if they are turned down for these modelling jobs. If however, they instead take the course leaders' advice to try out swimsuit or commercial modelling, they'll be more likely to be accepted by a suitable modelling agency and get modelling work on a regular basis, which will not only increase their confidence but also possibly allow them to make this their full-time career.
